Welcome to the MentalHealthDiscrimination blog.  Our mission is to educate on societal issues that people with mental illness face and convince our readers that the stigma against mental illness is justifiably discrimination.  According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 1 in 5 adults (who have the resources to receive a diagnosis) experience mental illness in the United States. People living with mental illness have as much of a choice in the matter as patients with cancer, or any disease. However, biases held by policymakers and society cause people with mental illnesses to be discriminated against.

As with any issue involving prejudicial treatment of a certain group, understanding is the first step for justice. Our goal is for the unequal treatment of people with mental illness to be recognized and eradicated.  We will specifically blog about the following topics: people with mental illnesses being viewed as “dangerous,” the general public and professionals not taking mental health as seriously as physical health, workplace discrimination, and how to make a change.
